Phenolphthalein

Phenolphthalein is a kind of weak organic acid. It is a white or yellowish crystal at room temperature. It is odorless, tasteless, insoluble in water and soluble in alcohol (ethanol) and ether. It is dissolved in alcohol solution to make acid-base indicator. It is colorless in acid solution and red in alkali solution or alkali metal carbonate solution. However, if it is in concentrated alkali solution, colorless tri metal salt will be generated and the red color will fade away. In view of this characteristic, it is often used as an indicator in acid-base titration in the laboratory. The range of color change is from colorless to red with pH value of 8.2-10.0. When phenolphthalein reagent drops into water or neutral and acidic aqueous solution, white turbid substance will appear, which is due to the fact that alcohol is easy to dissolve in water and phenolphthalein in reagent is difficult to dissolve in water.
